WE ENLISTED IN THE NAVY EXPECTING TO BE SAILORS
BUT LITTLE DID WE KNOW THIS WOULD NOT GO IN OUR FAVOR
SURE WE DID OUR TIME GETTING TRAINED BY THE NAVY
AND BEING STATIONED AT A NAVAL HOSPITAL WHICH WAS REALLY GRAVY
WE WERE THEN TRANSFERRED AND ASSIGNED TO THE MARINES
WHERE WE KNEW IT WAS NOT PART OF OUR DREAMS
AFTER COMING IN COUNTRY OUR ASSIGNMENTS WERE HANDED OUT
WE EACH CAME TO 3/26 AND ASSIGNED OUR DUTIES WITH LITTLE DOUBT
ALL OF US HUMPED THE BUSH WITH THESE FINE MARINES AT OUR SIDE
WHOM WE GOT TO KNOW BETTER THAN ANYONE IN OUR LIFE
MUTUAL RESPECT BECAME EVIDENT BETWEEN A CORPSMAN AND HIS MARINES
EACH DEPENDING ON THE OTHER IN ORDER TO SURVIVE THESE EXTREMES
THE SOUND OF "CORPSMAN UP" WOULD RING LOUD AND CLEAR
WE HAD TO KEEP THEIR TRUST BY SHOWING NO FEAR
WE DODGED BULLETS AND RAN THROUGH MINEFIELDS
IN ORDER TO GET TO THOSE WHO NEEDED OUR SKILLS
LITTLE DID WE KNOW OUR JOB WOULD ALSO ENTAIL
SO MANY EXTRA DUTIES IN THIS GOD FORSAKEN HELL
BUT THESE JOBS MADE US PROUD AND GRATEFUL
AS WE HAD TO PROVE THAT WE WERE FAITHFUL
OUR MARINES CONFIDED IN US AND TOLD US THEIR PROBLEMS AND FEARS
AND TREATED US LIKE WE'D BEEN THEIR CLOSE BROTHER FOR YEARS
THEY LOOKED OUT FOR US AS WE DID FOR THEM
THAT'S WHY IT WAS SO HARD WHEN ANYONE WENT DOWN
A SPECIAL BOND WAS FORMED WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING
UNTIL 30 YEARS LATER WHEN THE BEER WAS FREE FLOWING
SO WHEN THE QUESTION IS ASKED WHETHER WE'RE SAILOR OR MARINE
IS THERE ANY GUESS AFTER DESCRIBING THIS SCENE
